Moirae Foundation's Rules

General Rules & Guidelines

These are the rules and guidelines for the Moirae Foundation roleplaying game. Breaking rules is grounds for penalties up to immediate termination of all play privileges. Guidelines are suggestions we strongly hope you'll follow for the enjoyment of everyone.

Rules

  • All of SOI's Rules apply
  • Play nice with others or don't play with them at all
  • Play fair; this includes, but is not limited to, keeping track of Yen Vouchers, Missions, Reputation, and time-based limits
  • A player's character belongs to them alone; the world belongs to everyone equally
  • An admin's word is a rule; it can be appealed up to the Moirae CEO, and his word is final

Player Guidelines

  • Allow your character to evolve! While this is a consent-based game, allowing external influences to push you in unexpected directions is fun
  • Use Upgrades, Strengths and Weaknesses as guidelines. In most cases of conflict, a character with higher classes of appropriate Upgrades should prevail. Here's how I'd do it.
  • Involve others! Not only do missions pay better if more operatives are involved, but they're also more fun!
  • Take turns storytelling! Designate someone to take the lead in a mission and describe the opposition and environment for the group. Make it someone new each time! Alternately, try this.

This page will be updated with additional rules and guidelines, should they become necessary. Hopefully they won't, but check back regularly. Better yet, sign up to the wiki and receive email notifications for all updates! You are responsible for understanding and following these rules.

Character Creation

Currently, the only types of characters available for play are operatives. If you'd like to play a non-operative NPC, please contact me. Other character types will become available at a later date.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with some of the rules and setting prior to creating a character, particularly the sections on Missions, Upgrades, and Reputation. This game has some rules you may not be used to and understanding them could be vital to your enjoyment.

For those of you who have played at SOI in the past, or are playing here currently, please note the following: Characters with histories from other realms cannot be brought to Moirae. However, there's absolutely no reason you can't reuse a name you're already using elsewhere. Account space can be at a premium for some players and we understand this very well. Please check with your existing realm to make certain they don't have any rules regarding name sharing if you choose to use an existing handle here.

Character creation is a simple process; there's even a handy template available for your use! Begin at the Character Cork. (This link will open the Character Cork in a new window.)

Create a post in the character cork and include the following:

  • A name. Many operatives also have a nickname or moniker they go by; a street name. If you're stuck for ideas, I suggest the following random name generators: Seventh Sanctum, Behind The Name
  • A celebrity claim. Please check the Celebrity Claims page to make certain the celebrity you want isn't already taken. If your character doesn't appear exactly as the celebrity does, it might be helpful to include a brief physical description as well.
  • Choose either three Class 1 Upgrades or one Class 2 Upgrade from the Upgrades page.
  • Select two starting Reputations and add 1 point to each of them from the Reputation page. Please note: in this case, points may be added to Fame as well as the standard categories.
  • Describe two Strengths for your character; these are things he or she is good at or things they can count on in a pinch. Try to avoid duplicating Upgrades. Strengths can be psychological, social, or spiritual as well as physical. While Strengths can change, a character will never have more than two of them.
  • Choose at least one Weakness for your character; these are things your character is not good at or another fault that permeates their being. While Weaknesses can change, a character will never have fewer than one of them.
  • Explain one long-term goal your character has, as well as one short-term goal. While these goals can (and should) be resolved during play, they should always be replaced by new goals. Think of the long-term goal as something you'd like your character to strive for over a long story arc. Think of the short-term goal as something you'd really enjoy if someone threw it at you during a slow point in play. Goals should really not revolve around the acquisition of Upgrades; everybody has a goal of acquiring Upgrades.
  • Tell us one thing your character believes in so strongly it consumes them- a passion or obsession.
  • Relate how your operative obtained the 5,000,000 yen to purchase their license. For most citizens of Lower Chiba, earning this sort of cash is a big deal. Tell us your story of sacrifice, explain how it changed your character or how it affects their current situation.
  • Check this out for another way to look at these things that might help put them into perspective.

And that's it! If you'd like to add more, you're certainly welcome to. Some players prefer large histories to exist prior to play and others do not; both are welcome. If you've created a home page for your character, please provide the link and I'll make sure the Character Pages section is properly updated.

If you'd like to have a character page hosted here on the wiki, it's easy! Here's an example of what the page will look like: Blank Character Page. To create your character page, just type "character:YOURNAMEHERE" into the Add A New Page box on the bar to the left and you should be on your way. If you're not comfortable with that, let me know and I'll set a page up for you.

If you decide to go without a home page, I'll link to your cork post.

Once you've complete the required portions, as well as anything extra you might wish to include, you're welcome to start playing!

I hope you enjoy your time at Moirae Foundation and share many fantastic, daring adventures with the other players. If you need help with any part of character creation, or anything else for that matter, don't hesitate to contact me or to post in the IC/OOC Cork.

Missions

Moirae Foundation operatives earn a living by completing missions which are publicly available at any cyberspace terminal. An operative will access the terminal, sort through available missions, select one that she qualifies for and proceed to accomplish the objectives. Often, this will require the operative to assemble a team. In exchange for these services, the Moirae Foundation rewards the operatives with Yen Vouchers (or YV), which are an abstract form of currency. These Vouchers may then exchanged for Upgrades and other items or services.

Here is an example of a mission:

Apprehend Rogue Operative

Objective: A former employee of the Moirae Foundation has gone rogue, carrying with him some sensitive material from the Foundation's data stores. Apprehend this rogue operative (Kahmil Hammadi, male, age 32) and return him alive. Secondary objective: secure the lost data. Warning: Hammadi is an experienced operative trained in stealth, explosives, and firearms- proceed with caution.

Requirements: Team size: 2+. At least one operative must have Firearms or Hand to Hand Weaponry 2+; at least one operative must have Sensory Enhancement 1+.

Pay: 200 YV for 2 operatives, 250 for 3, 300 for 4, 325 for 5 or more.

Conditionals: 25 YV bonus per operative if data is recovered. -50 YV penalty per operative if Hammadi is killed.

OOC Notes: This is a critical storyline mission, please contact Moirae CEO for details.

To accept a mission, simply reply to it on the Mission Cork. The mission will be assigned to your character and her team; so have the rest of the team post as well! From that point forward, the mission is in progress and will continue until success is achieved or the mission is abandoned. Failed missions result in no pay and the mission may or may not become available again in the future.

In order to succeed at a mission, your team must meet the minimum requirements and you must all get together and play out the progress! Enjoy yourselves and take your time achieving the mission's objectives. If you're successful, each operative will receive the pay listed. Please note that each operative receives more pay as the number of characters involved increases! It pays to get others involved in your stories. Also pay attention to the conditional bonuses and penalties, as these can affect the way you want your story to progress.

In most cases, it will be the responsibility of the players to tell the story of their mission; the mission parameters are only a guideline and starting point for their storyline. However, in certain cases the admins of Moirae Foundation will have special plans for a mission. If this is the case, there will be mention made in the OOC Notes, as there is above. Perhaps Hammadi has some important information, or perhaps his situation is more than it seems!

Finally, an operative can only be paid for 2 missions in a calendar month, maximum. This shouldn't stop an operative from participating in more if they wish, but they'll effectively be doing so pro bono. Instead, the operative should enjoy their down time and get social in one of Chiba's bars, perhaps. Go explore, make contacts, get personal. This is also a great reason to spend a little extra time playing through each mission. Give them some challenge, some close calls, harrowing twists, and some drama. Go wild and you'll enjoy your play that much more.

Yen Vouchers

Yen Vouchers (YV) are an abstract form of currency utilized between the Moirae Foundation and its operatives. While YV cannot be converted to cash, they can be spent on a variety of products offered by the Moirae Foundation and its subsidiaries. These products are commonly referred to as upgrades.

YV exist only electronically. Because they are a representation of the relationship between the Moirae Foundation and specific individuals, YV cannot be transferred between licensed operatives in any fashion. However, in certain specific instances, the Moirae Foundation will allow them to be transferred to non-operatives in exchange for goods or services that are in the best interest of the corporation.

Players are responsible for tracking their YV transactions and maintaining those records. The admins will not be tracking this on a regular basis, though we do reserve the right to run an audit on any character; discrepancies will be resolved in the house's favor. I strongly suggest using your initial character cork post to keep track of YV, that way a record is always available for yourself and others.

Please note that Yen Vouchers are a completely different form of currency than the standard yen. Yen Vouchers are primarily an OOC device to track the progression of your character, whereas yen are a completely fictional currency, used in game for flavor.

Upgrades

Upgrades represent access to training or improvements for your character - or both! - whether weapons, armor, cybernetics or lifestyle. Each Upgrade is a category and has 5 classes (0-4). Examples are provided for each class, but don't feel limited by them! If you have specific ideas for what you want, let us know and we'll add those options to the lists. If your operative has a certain class of Upgrade, it can be assumed he has a handful of those items, and some from the classes beneath it. Be reasonable; nobody needs everything.

Every operative is assumed to have at least 0 in each category; additional classes indicate exceptional gear or training. Further Upgrades and classes will be added as the game progresses. If you have any suggestions, please don't hesitate to provide them!

Here are some general guidelines concerning Upgrades:

  • The average Lower Chiba resident has a class 0 in all Upgrades.
  • Class 3 and higher Upgrades are restricted to operative, corporate officer, and military use.
  • Training alone can only be responsible for the equal of a class 1 Upgrade in most cases; class 2 very rarely. Class 3 or higher Upgrades must be the result of some exceptional gear or, preferably, transhuman modification.
  • Class 4 Upgrades are extremely rare and generally require direct corporate patronage to purchase.

This is a list of costs for each class of Upgrade:

  • Class 1: 200 YV
  • Class 2: 800 YV
  • Class 3: 1800 YV
  • Class 4: Circumstantial

Here is a list of the Upgrades and classes currently available:

Reputation

Reputation can make or break an operative, and becoming someone is often the most a downtrodden resident of Lower Chiba can hope for.

To represent this, there is a Reputation List to display the current levels of each character amongst the various categories. These categories are currently as follows:

  • Altruistic
  • Feared
  • Loved
  • Respected
  • Sexy
  • Skilled
  • Smart
  • Trusted

Up to twice each month, every player may provide a Reputation increase to a character they don't control. To do this, a post must be created on the Reputation Cork. The post should include a reason for this increase, an example, and of course the Reputation to be increased. (Players familiar with roleplaying at SOI might recognize this as a variant of the Applause Cork concept.) Please note that both of your allotted monthly gifts can't be given to the same character.

You may have noticed that a player may only provide Reputation increases for characters they don't control. Would you like a Reputation decrease for your villain? Perhaps even a negative Reputation? Record your deeds of infamy in the applause cork to reduce your own character's Reputation as well! Each post will reduce your character's Reputation by 2. After all, Reputation is a slippery slope!

There is also a general Fame category indicating how genuinely famous an operative has become, but this is not gifted by other players. The Fame category can only be increased by receiving rewards from specific missions and by gifting from an admin. In an effort to be fair, admins will not gift admin characters with Fame. If you truly feel an admin's character is deserving of Fame, nominate the character on the Reputation Cork. This does not cost one of your monthly gifts! If at least two other non-admin players reply to the post, seconding the nomination, the Fame will be awarded.
